Abstract

The ease of access to dating applications such as Tinder, Tantan, MiChat, Bumble, OkCupid, and Badoo is no longer limited to single users; married men also use them, opening opportunities for infidelity that threatens marital stability. This study aims to identify behavioral patterns of dating application use among married men, analyze their effects on household integrity, and formulate preventive and remedial measures. The research employs a field study with a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with six informants, namely married men who fell into extramarital affairs through dating applications. The findings show that dating application use among the husbands follows a relatively uniform escalation pattern: triggered by boredom, loneliness, marital saturation, and work-related physical distance, it moves from profile creation through intensive chatting to physical meetings and illicit relationships within less than a month. Its effects on household integrity appear across four overlapping dimensions, namely psychological-relational, economic, social, and legal, with the most prominent dimension determined by how the affair was disclosed. None of the informants’ marriages has ended in a divorce decree, but all are undergoing a process of iṣlāḥ (reconciliation) whose prospects depend on the severity of the betrayal, the extent of social disgrace, and the wife’s response. This study recommends preventive and curative countermeasures through strengthening family resilience, improving digital literacy, revitalizing marital communication, and optimizing the role of religious leaders, the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA), and BP4 in fostering harmonious families.
